10-0, Cats Continue To Roll

12/13/09

John Calipari matched Adolph Rupp's start in the 1930-1931 season after Kentucky defeated Indiana to improve to 10-0 on the year. 1930 was a loooooooooong time ago, but it shows you just how well Cal and his Cats are doing. Even more staggering is that this is the first time since the 1992-1993 season in which a Kentucky squad has started off 10-0. Many good to great teams have come and gone, yet none since that time have done what this year's Wildcats team is doing.

So how far can Kentucky continue to roll? Is it feasible that this year's team can go undefeated? Normally I would say that is a virtual impossibility, but given the talent level on this team, I wouldn't be surprised. The next true challenging game will come against those dirty Cardinals from Louisville. That hated team from that hated city coached by that hated man. Yes, they should be the next real threat to end UK's undefeated streak. The only problem is that I don't think they have nearly enough of an arsenal to do it.

Looking at the SEC, the conference isn't as stacked as in past seasons, but it is definitely improved from a year ago. Given that road wins in this conference are very difficult to come by, there is potential for the Cats to have a letdown on the road. The only problem is that I don't sense any letdowns at this point. On the opposite end, UK is back to being feared at home, and I do not see any teams that could hand us a rare home loss. Undefeated is a very scary word, but as crazy as it sounds, it isn't out of the realm of possibility.

One of the more impressive attributes with this Kentucky team is that there are so many options. If John Wall is having an off night Eric Bledsoe steps up. If Patrick Patterson is not his usual self DeMarcus Cousins provides relief. Daniel Orton, Darnell Dodson, Darius Miller, and Ramon Harris provide key baskets and/or valuable defensive stops. Coach Calipari has so many weapons at his disposal that even the greatest army would retreat. However, lets not get too ahead of ourselves. This team is still 'not that good'. Coach Calipari reiterates that he loves his team and is happy that they won, but that they are far from where they need to be. If you say so coach. If they stay this bad all season, I'll be a happy fan.
